How to stay warm?
More time in the whitetail woods will result in more deer. We all know the most successful hunter in camp almost always spends the most time hunting. I personally hate hunting when I am cold, and do not last long once I become cold. I am going to write out my science based philosophy out first, and after that I will talk about the gear I use to hunt deer until January.
Science Based Philosophy
Sweat is the enemy. Biggest cause of sweat in the woods is walking in wearing all the gear you will need to be warm in the tree. A good rule of thumb is you should be heading into the woods a tad cold. I am going to make a video of me putting my warm clothes on while wearing my saddle.
If your hands and feet get cold the answer is to get a warmer core temp. The instinct is to get warmer gloves and boots, which are important, but typically when we feel cold hands and feet we are feeling our bodies move blood from the extremities to our core to keep us alive.
Spend your money on high quality warm gear: merino wool base layers; warm winter clothes that are filled with down or real thinsulate insulation; heated vest and hand warmers
Gear I use
How I walk in the woods if the weather is 40 or below: midweight scentlok pants and blouse; scentlok early season facemask; and lightweight scentlok gloves.
What I put on when I am at hunting height and setup: heated vest, winter weight facemask, late season scentlok bibs, late season scentlok coat, hands in muff with two handwarmers.
