Things to Avoid
Trail cams- I am not trying to be controversial with this one, and I know trail cams have had some successes. As a new hunter put your focus on old fashioned techniques using sign from the woods to guide your stand setup. Hunt these trees and keep notes, bad spot move. Good spot keep coming back. Trail cams leave scent and I don't think they affect hunting decisions and most of what they are used for is to see what is going on in the woods. Go hunting and see what is there.
Unnecessary Toys- If it doesn't help you get closer to deer ditch it. most of the scents sold in stores are worthless. Can be effective, but messy and a waste of money
Ineffective Stands- two options for hunters elevate or conceal. Anything under 18 feet is within a deer's peripheral vision. if using ground blinds put some time and effort into making it harder for deer to detect you. Wear black, think about sun angles
Wolf blamers- person who blames wolves for their lack of filled tags. These hunters tend to lack the self awareness to change their strategy and tactics so they blame a natural predator that dweer have coevolved with. Simply put if you aren't seeing deer Move!. There are tons of deer in the woods but not every spot sees the same density and frequency of deer. For you wolf haters, answer me this: If wolves eat all the deer why is there deer poop in the woods? What makes the deer tracks? How did the rut signposting appear? Why are cars hitting deer on the roadway? How come the deer don't eat the deer your neighbors shoot?
